Food for Thought

Books. They are one of the greatest inventions of human evolution. Television also one of the other good inventions but has the potential to make you do nothing and just mindlessly watch or get entertained.

The reason I say that is there is too much noise on television.

Books demand commitment and focus from you. They make you persevere and are good for the brain. Also it could be the connection between you and author. It could be the culmination of the authors experiences, knowledge or outlook towards life. It is focused and surrounds a specific theme or topic.

Writing a book could be a biggest contribution and could serve as a mode of communication for generations to come. Thus we have a chance to experience one's legacy. Be inspired and motivated by it.

For me I have days where I just binge watch "Netflix" and feel guilty that I didn't do any productive that day. This happens especially on the weekends. I have been known to binge watch Breaking Bad, House of Cards, Orange Is the New Black, Master of None. Finished most of these episodes over weekends.

What did I learn from them ? Nothing relevant or useful.

Would I need to know how to cook meth and make money out of it ? Nope.

Do I need to know how dirty U.S. Politics can be and how to become a president ? Nope

Do I need to know about how a women's prison could be and how you could have fun being a lesbian ? Probably not.

None of the above shows are relevant or useful to me but the storyline and screenplay is so engaging that I kept binge watching them.

I wish I could read a book without stopping. Usually I doze off. But the value I get from a book is much more. Yes I might not be as entertained by a book as I am entertained by these shows. But books are what could shift our thinking and may be how we act.

Reading is very essential in this world and reading as many books as we can on topics we are interested is a great way to feed  the brain with the exercise it needs.

Some of my all-time favorite books that I finished reading

  • The Alchemist
  • 7 habits of Highly Effective People
  • Rich Dad, Poor Dad
  • Power of Now
  • The One Thing
  • 4 hour work week
  • Choose Yourself
  • Happy Money
  • How Will You Measure Your Life ?

There are many books I could list and hand finished reading but these are on top of mind and highly recommend reading them if you get a chance
