Being Yourself

I feel the God has bestowed some powers or is in my favor these days. I am feeling it that way because somehow what ever I am feeling or dreaming about these days, the God is connecting it or giving some context to my dreams or may be he has given me the power to "Connect the DOTS".

Alright, you might be wondering "What in the world I am talking". I am talking about "Being Yourself", because the world doesn't want you to be "Yourself" and I am facing it more often these days.

To give more context, long ago, may be 3 years back in search of my "Life's purpose" I came across an article that talked about the concepts in Buckminister Fuller's "Critical Path". I loved it and took it to heart.

I used to refer it quiet often, but almost after 3 years I again looked at the book "Critical Path" and read the E.E. Cumming's "A Poet's Advice" in it where he talks about the following things
  • Feeling
  • Knowing
  • Believing
  • Thinking
which made more sense and it felt like GOD sent this message to me because, surprisingly I have been feeling about it and all of a sudden ( I should say miraculously) I happen to look at it.

It was written in context of poetry but I feel it applies in any context. Cummings says "Whenever you think or you believe or you know, you are lot of other people, but the moment you feel, you are nobody-but-yourself".

I like this the most,

To be nobody-but-yourself - in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.

I feel very satisfied and have a sense of accomplishment after coming across this because it makes me feel I am going in the direction I need to go and that I am not the odd man out. The fight I have been putting is worth the fight and I wish I came across this much earlier so that I wouldn't have wasted or spent my time thinking and asking the questions

  • Why is this happening to me ?
  • Why don't people understand ?
  • Is anything wrong with me ?
Sometimes continous thinking on these even made me question the direction I chose and even made my stupid part of the brain ask me questions like
  • Do you know what you are doing ?
  • Don't you think you are arrogant and selfish ?

Thank you Buckminister Fuller and E.E.Cummings for confirming that "I am in the right direction its worth fighting for the direction I chose ".

The complete expert of E.E.Cummings "Poet's Advice"

A poet is somebody who feels, and who expresses his feeling through words.

This may sound easy. It isn't.

A lot of people think or believe or know they feel - but that's thinking or believing or knowing; not feeling. And poetry is feeling - not knowing or believing or thinking.

Almost anybody can learn to think or believe or know, but not a single human being can be taught to feel. Why? Because whenever you think or you believe or you know, you're a lot of other people: but the moment you feel, you're nobody-but-yourself.

To be nobody-but-yourself - in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.

As for expressing nobody-but-yourself in words, that means working just a little harder than anybody who isn't a poet can possibly imagine. Why?

Because nothing is quite as easy as using words like somebody else. We all of us do exactly this nearly all of the time - and whenever we do it, we are not poets.

If, at the end of your first ten or fifteen years of fighting and working and feeling, you find you've written one line of one poem, you'll be very lucky indeed.

And so my advice to all young people who wish to become poets is: do something easy, like learning how to blow up the world - unless you're not only willing, but glad, to feel and work and fight till you die.

Does this sound dismal? It isn't.

It's the most wonderful life on earth.

Or so I feel.

what counts in Life ?

I always ask myself "What is the purpose of my Life ?" Even though i haven't figured out yet, hopefully I will one day. I usually set goals and have a great sense of accomplishment when I achieve them. I review my goals quiet often and lately I have been thinking "Is this What I really want to do/achieve?", how is this adding value or making me happy.

As I have been thinking and questioning myself "What really matters ?" I came across this video which made me feel content and gave me a feeling of achievement/accomplishment. It's almost like I found the treasure as part of my exploration. The following video has influenced my thinking and gave answer to my long-lasting question ?

" What really matters in LIFE ? " - the intangible things (Happiness, Love, ........)

Not Everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted - Albert Einstein

Seems we go after tangible things for measuring almost everything ?

For example : My goals had some tangible things

  1. How much time I ran a marathon ?
  2. How much did I weigh to be in shape ?
  3. How much debt I have to clear off ?
But there is a pattern in all the above tangible things - they are leading me to the ultimate intangible thing - Happiness

  1. why does it matter how much time I ran in ? - Because It makes me happy with a sense of accomplishment
  2. how does it matter how much I weigh or if I am in shape or not ? - Because It makes me happy to look at myself when I am in shape
  3. Why do I have to be debt-free ? - Because it makes me Happy and gives me the financial freedom
May be it's time for me to add this to my goals list .

  1. How much Happy I am ? (if and only I know a way to measure Happiness)

Discipline in different facets of Life

These days I am thinking in terms of the following categories in everything I do. Somehow I came across a book which talks about "Turning Mediocrity into Greatness" and how we need to concentrate on different areas in life.

Following are some of the categories (they can be customized based on our individual preferences, but i felt they were apt as-is

  • Business/ Career
  • Family/ Friends
  • Money/ Finances
  • Recreation/ Fun
  • Health/ Diet/ Exercise
  • Faith/ Spiritual
  • Personal/ Development
So looking at the above categories, I feel I don't have discipline in any of the categories.

I need to proactively do better in the business/career section where i am just letting things happen instead of taking control and making things happen.

I need to make it a habit to reach out my family and even stay connected with the friends from my past while making new relationships/connections.

God, this is where I need utmost discipline. Money, i feel i am just spending what ever I get without saving, convincing my "Living in the Moment" heart while my brain keeps saying "If you listen to your heart, you won't have anything left for future". My heart immediately answers : "Do I look like I care about tomorrow ? I want to live in today.
Anyways I am trying to balance between my heart and the brain as both have their own valid points. Should start taking some cautious measure even here.

I guess I am doing OK here as i am having fun exploring different places as part of my running. This is something i feel good about but which is contradicting the above category of saving. I guess I just need to figure out "having fun while saving". It's an ART and i need to marvel in that art.

I am doing average in this as I am running, even though not disciplined enough and sometimes skipping some runs in a week. I am doing exercise , but still need to be more disciplined. I can't wait to get started on SWIMMING but this stupid lazy a** of mine is not taking control of things and just letting the time pass by. I need to get the car soon to go swimming.

I guess I am keeping myself motivated/inspired by have glances at some of the motivating videos or inspiring stories, but still should make sure I have a regular dosage.

This is another domain where i need to have a great amount of discipline. Ex: I have been finding new books which i desperately want to ready but staying away from them as my heart questioned me asking "Hey stupid what about the pile of books you have which are half-read, you can't start another book and add it to that pile, first finish of the things you started even before you start another one, or else discard those books". I know I can't discard those books as they are really good books so I am making sure I finish reading a book before I start another one.

My Reading list - Knowledge and Wisdom from the books

I can call and like to call myself a voracious reader as I read and like to read lot of books. But these days I am lacking discipline in completing the books. I am reading so many books simultaneously and at the end not completing even one. Lack of Focus, not good.

Need to FOCUS and start reading another book only after completely reading the previous book. I should also take an oath to not buy new books untill i finish reading the previous books.

Rule of Thumb .
Buy 1 new book, if you finished reading 1 book.
Similary 2 new books if you finished reading 2 books...........................

Finished Books
  • You can Win
  • Attitude is Everything
  • One Night at the Call Center
  • The Alchemist

My Current Reading List
  • Imaging India (on going...a big book)
  • Getting Real (Almost done...)
  • Rework (Incomplete...)
  • Delivering Happiness. (Almost done...)
  • The Tipping Point (Incomplete....)
  • The Outliers (Incomplete...)
  • Web Design Business Kit (Incomplete...)
  • Website Manual (Incomplete...)
  • Web Re-design 2.0 Workflow (Incomplete...)
Eagerly Waiting to Read
  • Good To Great
  • Crush it
  • The four-hour work week

God please give me the discipline to focus and get things done. (finish reading books)

Delivering Happiness

Sorry for my late post, I wanted to write this post long back in June when i was reading the advanced copy of "Delivering Happiness" sent by Tony.

It's a great book to read for everyone/anyone looking to do something Big/Great and feel happy and make others happy.

Two Sides of the Coin

Aren't there two sides for a coin ? Doesn't an issue/statement have two perspectives atleast when two people are involved in a conversation, "Yours" and "Mine". Can we have a dialogue instead of monologue ??

May be all the above things don't make sense to you, please bare with me I will take time to elaborate on that.

Winners Vs Losers

People, there are different kinds of them in this world. One such kind is LOSERS. I hate to talk about LOSERS instead of WINNERS but I realized that it is one of the way to stay away from them as I now know who is a LOSER and how they are contagious. May be to appreciate the good we should know what is bad.

I believe "Winners make it happen. Losers let it happen".

Losers :
  1. Don't have dreams or afraid of dreaming big
  2. Let Life just pass by them and they don't care to do anything about it.
  3. play the game "guilt-trip" well.
  4. are pessimists
  5. can be as sarcastic as hell, because all they can do is be sarcastic.
  6. have lot of theories (some dumb enough) to talk about, but nothing in practice
  7. they have lot of opinions on "how others should live their life" while they don't even check what a mess they are living in.
and the best part of them is, they can give "Criticism" that literally doesn't make any sense or is not at all constructive.

I should have found this great article "How to handle Criticism" earlier so that I wouldn't have wasted time thinking about these LOSERS talk.

Pain of Discipline or Pain of Regret

These days I have been thinking alot about Pain of Discipline and Pain of Regret. We all might have gone through some form of pain at some point of time in LIFE . But it all comes to the question "Is something worth the pain ?".

But recently I got an answer in the form of a question "Are you facing the pain due to discipline or pain due to regret ?". That question answered a lot of other questions for me.

One great person from whom every runner(for that matter every person bearing the pain of Discipline) should be inspired and motivated by Bart Yasso, the Chief Running Officer of Runners World. He at the age of 54 besides battling with a chronic lyme disease is running his last race on his life list, a 56 mile Comrades Marathon, which is his final goal of running. He confirmed with his Starting Again that it gives immense satisfaction and a feeling of accomplishment when bearing the pain of discipline.

The LAST LIFE RACE - Comrades

Bart in Africa

Tom's Story

Top Americans

Training Run

Bart's DownHill Battle

Starting Again

Few Examples : I categorize the pain caused by running, workout etc as "Pain of Discipline" anything that makes us feel satisfied after doing it (ofcourse not while doing it). Growing a big tummy and struggling to carry that tummy(out of shape), slacking off and looking back asking "WTH did I do all this time? can be categorized as "pain of regret" which might have been avoided with some discipline. (Ofcourse even they are learning lessons but hope we don't take much time to learn these lessons).

Now I have this weapon(question) which I can use whenever I am feeling the pain.

Am I facing the pain due to Discipline or regret. If it is due to regret it's time to add some discipline.

Bribe Fighter - A way to eradicate Corruption that could lead to a Developed India

If you ask "Why has India been a developing country not a developed country for decades ?". One answer that would come from most of the citizens of India is "the system which is corrupt". Of course if the system is corrupt , do you expect people in the system to be honest ? Actually it is interdependent System making people corrupt. Corrupted people in turn taking advantage of the system. I have had this debate for long and feel the system needs a change.

With new reforms(from thoughtful and ofcourse frustrated researchers/reformers/visionaries ) things are changing and there is HOPE to see a DEVELOPED INDIA.

One of such great reformers/innovators are Satindar Mohan Bhagat and Vijay Anand have found a way to combat corruption in India through "Zero Rupee note". While Satindar has come up with this great idea , vijay anand made it a reality through 5th pillar.

Vijay Anand gives examples of how this idea works and the great impact it has created so far. I am glad to see the change.

I feel it's worth contributing to this great cause which gives me the satisfaction that I have contributed towards DEVELOPED INDIA.

A New way of business thinking

Lately I have been inspired and motivated by David Heinemeier Hansson and Jason Fried of 37signals. I should say they changed the outlook in doing business (esp the web world). I have read their both books Getting Real and Rework.

Awesome books for every aspiring entrepreneur. It wouldn't hurt to follow their Signal Vs Noice blog. It has some great insights.

I wonder how Jason Fried came up with the name 37signals ?
